Configure ESET firewall for Synology Assistant Access

Post by steven »

The newer versions of ESET may block the Synology Assistant. When this happens the assistant cannot find any devices on your network. However, this is simple to fix if you create a rule allowing Synology Assistant to scan your network and map drives.

First load ESET and when the screen appears, select Setup and then Advanced setup at the lower right.

When the advanced setup screen appears select network protection from the left column.

Note the filtering mode defaults to automatic. If you want ESET to create the rule you set can set this to learning or interactive mode. However ESET will ask you to create a rule for anything running in the background that tries to communicate over your network. This can be a bit of a pain so I found it easier to create a rule.

To manually create a rule for the Synology Assistant leave the setting in automatic and select Advanced.

Then select Edit on the Rules row.

Select the Add button at the lower left.

The default Add Rules window appears.

In the name box you can enter any name you like but make sure it describes the program you are creating the rule for so it's easy to identify if you later add more rules. Then, using the pull down selection, populate the remaining boxes as shown.

Select the Local tab at the top of the rules window and then click on the three dots in the application window.

Now browse to the DS Assistant file location then click on DSAssistant.exe. The location should be similar to the one shown below in the code box.

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\Synology\Assistant\DSAssistant.exe

Image

The program will be added to the application box.

Select OK to save your settings on each window and they will close. Now when you select edit rules, your new rule will appear in the window.

When complete exit ESET.
